Theme 2026: The Roman Empire

Every year, we surprise our visitors all over again. A new theme every year, new sand sculptures every year—
—a completely new experience every year!

Following the success of previous exhibitions, our international artists will continue to build upon a story that began centuries ago in 2026. A story of power, ambition, culture, and progress: The Roman Empire.

This exhibition is on view from today through January 2, 2027.

In this unique retrospective exhibition, you’ll discover the rise, heyday, and fall of a global empire that has left a lasting mark on Europe. From emperors and soldiers to temples, mythology, and everyday life: each sculpture tells its own story.

The Roman influence in the Netherlands also plays a prominent role in the exhibition. For example, the exhibition highlights the Lower Germanic Limes, the ancient northern border of the Roman Empire, which will mark its fifth anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2026. This brings to life not only international history but also the Roman past in our own country.

What makes this exhibition particularly special is that you not only get to see impressive sand sculptures, but also embark on an educational and surprising journey through history. Thanks to collaborations with leading museums and the inclusion of genuine museum pieces on loan, the exhibition offers a unique blend of art, history, and immersive experience.
